General Update

August was a busy month in the park, and this continues into September.

We have been keeping a careful eye on falling water levels in the park including the canal pond in Russell Gardens, throughout the recent very dry spell. Starting in August, we have taken the opportunity to clean the pond and we are carrying out investigations to see what repairs are needed. As the pond was cleaned, the fish, large and small, were moved down stream to deeper waters.

The trees in the parks are continually monitored, and we continue to undertake essential tree works throughout the parks.

Kearsney Abbey, Russell Gardens & Bushy Ruff

Visitor numbers have been high this summer and the café has been busy selling coffee, teas and homemade cakes.

The grand border in Russell Gardens has looked lovely throughout the summer months and although some of the flowering perennial plants are coming to an end there is still lots of colour with the late flowering herbaceous plants and amazing seed-heads.

The orchard has established well, and we have had some nice fruit forming on most of the trees.

Buffy Ruff continues to be a wonderful habitat for wildlife, and it's where you can start the 7 mile Kearsney Loop. Maps are available in the Kearsney Café.

Kearsney Parks 2023 Calendar

As autumn arrives, and we are looking at producing next year’s calendar, we are looking for photos for the 2023 calendar. If you have any photos that you feel will be suitable, please do send them in. In order for us to display these photos, the preferred format is landscape.

Please email them to kearsney.parks@dover.gov.uk

Wildlife

The parks continue to be a haven for wildlife.

The lily pond continues to establish and has had an amazing number of both damselflies and dragonflies visiting. If you stand and watch, you may see the females laying their eggs on the water surface.

Please continue to be aware and watch out for the wildlife when you are visiting and ensure your dogs are under control and on their leads in the designated areas of the park.

Volunteering at Kearsney Parks

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who continue to help keep the parks looking so lovely. We have regular volunteers who litter pick, and volunteer tasks taking place weekly.

We are continuing to carry out general maintenance within the parks including on the grand border in Russell Gardens and the orchard. If you are interested in volunteering, and would like to be put on our database, please get in touch at kearsney.parks@dover.gov.uk.
