Project Update September 2017
This month work in Russell Gardens is continuing, we’re working with schools, and more events are planned for the autumn!
Update on Russell Gardens’ ornamental pond
Works to the ornamental pond in Russell Gardens are progressing. There is controlled access to pathways at Russell Gardens during the de-silting work. The pond will be empty of water while this takes place. Please be aware of the works and the movement of equipment and please take care while on site.
Kearsney Abbey playground
Work is starting on Monday 18th September to replace damaged paths in the play area in Kearsney Abbey. The play area will be closed for around four days while the work takes place.
Working with schools
We’re working with a number of local schools to use the parks for outdoors learning. Seven primary schools in Dover are having free Forest School lessons in the parks between now and November. We’re also developing free teaching resources, which should be available on our website early next year.
The Big Draw
Throughout October, across the country, everyone is being encouraged to get drawing as part of the national BIG DRAW Festival. This year, we’re teaming up with Dover Arts Development, Dover Big Local ART31 and Astor College. The theme is Living Lines and you’ll be able to experiment with animation, inspired by imagery and stories relating to Kearsney Parks.
The first event will take place on Sunday 22nd October, 11am-1pm, meeting outside the café in Kearsney Abbey. The second event will be a drop-in session on Wednesday 25th October, 11am-4pm, in the Dover Big Local Hub, Unit 18 Charlton Centre. The sessions are free and for all ages and abilities. More information is at http://www.thebigdraw.org/about-the-big-draw-festival
Your memories and stories
If you have any stories about Kearsney Abbey or Russell Gardens that you’d like to share, please come and see us on Tuesday 24th October. Weather permitting, we’ll be outside the café in Kearsney Abbey from 2pm – 3.30pm (and inside if it rains) to record your tales and memories.
River Tales will be in Kearsney Abbey on Sunday 29th October from 2pm-4pm. Come along to the boating lake to meet the River Spirit, take part in a drumming workshop, hear some river tales and songs, and end up parading through the park!
Photography workshop in November
Our next photography workshop will take place in Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens on Saturday 4th November, from 1.30pm – 3pm. The theme will be ‘Autumn in the park; using the colour wheel as a reference to photograph the autumn landscape’. The workshop will take a creative, rather than a technical, approach. Places are free but need to be booked by emailing email@example.com
Save the date
The next Kearsney Parks Forum meeting will take place on Wednesday 22nd November, from 6pm until 7.30pm. If you would like to get involved and help shape our plans for the project, please come along. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday 16th November if you’d like to attend.
