Project Update May 2019

Works update

The landscape contractor, idverde, is now on site. They have set up their compound and have started work on extending the western car park in Kearsney Abbey. Over the next year, they’ll be carrying out works to the listed structures in Russell Gardens, creating new pathways in both parks and installing an ‘eyecatcher’ bridge to make a circular walk around the end of the boating lake in Kearsney Abbey.

Park and Ride on Bank Holiday weekend

We will be trialling a Park and Ride service to Kearsney Abbey over the May Bank Holiday weekend. A free bus will run from Dover District Council’s main office at Whitfield, to the car park in Kearsney Abbey. It will run from 9am-5pm on Saturday 25, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May. The bus will be accessible to wheelchairs and buggies. Dogs will be allowed at the driver’s discretion. More information is on our events page

Wildlife in the River Dour

A couple of events in May and June will give you the chance to find out more about the wonderful wildlife in the River Dour.

On Tuesday 28 May, there’ll be a pond dipping session in Kearsney Abbey. Pop in any time between 10am and 12.30pm to see what wildlife is living in the River Dour. Please remember to bring wellies and dipping nets! The session will start at the western car park (opposite Russell Gardens) and head down past the boating lake.

On Saturday 15 June, a ‘river bioblitz’ will start in Kearsney Abbey at 10.30am and then head towards the sea, along the River Dour. You'll get the chance to learn about and record the animals and plants of the river. You can also find out about becoming a River Ranger.

More information about both events is on our events page.

Kearsney Parks team

The Kearsney Parks team has doubled in size this month! We’ve been joined by two horticultural apprentices, Janiene Davenport and Joe Beaney. They are studying for a Level 2 Intermediate Horticulture Apprenticeship with Plumpton College, working towards a Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture. Our new Kearsney Parks Co-ordination Officer, Debra Stapley, has also joined the team. She’ll be responsible for finances, producing reports for our funders and managing volunteers.
